INSIDE LOOK
Spring 2019

Transforming the lives of families experiencing homelessness and poverty in Hendricks County, by providing housing, stability services and homelessness prevention, with the goal of achieving sustainable independence.

The first three months of 2019 have been a time of growth at Family Promise.  We have moved into our new State Bank of Lizton Family Promise Resource Center in Plainfield. (picture on right)  This increase in facility capacity has allowed for the expansion of life-changing programs that END and PREVENT homelessness and poverty in our community.  We are intensifying our efforts of breaking through the barriers that create and perpetuate homelessness and poverty.  The barriers of the lack of affordable housing, public transportation, child care and living wage jobs have held back our community for many years. Together, we are finding solutions that work for our community and creating stability for struggling families.

Family Promise is now able to assist more families and do it better!  With the support of so many, Family Promise has tripled the number of families assisted during the last three months of 2019, compared to the same period last year.  Hendricks County now has a coordinated community response to homelessness and poverty and it is working!  Program expansion will continue throughout 2019 in our pursuit of creating stability for struggling families.
ENDING Homelessness

Residential Services
"Never Give Up!  Keep on Trying!"

Bruce, Cynthia, Summer and Velma moved into their own home TODAY after almost three months as residents of Family Promise.  They had become homeless after an eviction from their home in Mooresville due to a job loss.  They stayed in a motel in Plainfield for about a month before finding their way to Family Promise.  During their time with us, they both found jobs, repaired their van and were able pay some long overdue bills.  Their new apartment is the nicest home this family has ever had!  They are so excited and little bit nervous, but they will make it!  We will stay with them for another two years to ensure their stability.

Summer and Velma, were able to continue school in Mooresville, where they lived prior to becoming homeless.  The Mooresville school bus picked-up and dropped-off at our State Bank of Lizton Family Promise Resource Center each day!  This provided some stability for the girls during a difficult period of transitions.

As Cynthia packed up the last of her things this afternoon, she told the other moms, "Never give up!  Just keep on trying!"
PREVENTING Homelessness

Stability Services
Family Promise provides stability services for 20 - 30 families each month.   We prevent their homelessness or rehouse them while staying in motels, cars, tents or with friends/family.  The family above, is one of those families.  They just moved into a new home last week!

From one of stability services moms:  "I'm truly thankful for the help Family Promise has been able to give me.  For the first time in my adult life I have stability and more control in my life.  You never realize how important a home is to a family until you hear how they're stuck from accomplishing their goals such as myself.  Having the foundation is a blessing because I no longer feel stuck, all because someone took a chance on me.  I never gave up trying to provide more for myself and my children, no matter the odds.  Everyone deserves stability and piece of mind.  I am happy that I found Family Promise to give me just that!" .
BREAKING BARRIERS

The #1 reason families experience homelessness in our community is a lack of affordable, accessible housing.  It may seem that new apartments are popping up everywhere and seem to be great places for lower income people to live.  But the reality is the majority of the apartments and houses in our community are not affordable for poor families.

When a family finally finds an affordable home, they often encounter another barrier.  Prior evictions, poor credit or felonies disqualify them from the rental and their application is rejected.

Family Promise is working to break this barrier, so that all families in our community have a home.  We need more landlords like the one above.  He forgave a prior eviction and took a chance on Preunda and her daughter.  Our "Family Eviction Prevention" program creates partnerships with property managers and landlords to make rental exceptions for Family Promise families and in turn we assist any of their tenants before they have to evict.  We are able to END and PREVENT homelessness!
