Shanty Town

Shanty Town Group

Last Saturday evening the youth of Pittsboro United Methodist Church held their second annual Shanty Town to bring awareness of homelessness to their community. The event consisted of the youth group sleeping outside on the front lawn of the church in cardboard shelters which they fashioned from boxes and cardboard sheets. This year’s event was dedicated to Family Promise of Hendricks County and the admission to participate was a donation of a pillow or blanket. Thirty youth and seven adults braved the strong winds and near freezing temperatures from the early evening until Sunday morning, concluding with their attendance and testimonies at the first service. The youth also sought participation from their schools, both Tri West Middle & High Schools. They participated through their business classes in a competition to host a pizza party by collecting the most items. The youth presented their donations to Jill & Mike Hostetler on Saturday night.

On behalf of Family Promise of Hendricks County we would like to thank the youth, the adult leadership and Pastor Dave Buckner of Pittsboro United Methodist Church for their support in the development of the Family Promise network. In addition, we would like to thank Tri-West students and faculty for their time energy and compassion.
